Intro
Customer service at both O.R. Tambo and at King Shaka international airports was very good, my dad had wheelchair assistance from the terminal buildings to the airplane, the onboard service was very good with friendly cabin crew and the onboard flight snacks were tasty: chicken mayo sandwich, a bag with dried fruit and nuts, an energy bar and an enjoyable Cappi orange juice. There was a variety of refreshments to choose from. Instead of the chicken mayo there was also a vegetarian option. On both trips the plane departed and arrived as per schedule. There was no time waiting for the luggage.
SAA leases SunExpress Boeing 737-800s to operate some of its domestic flights, including JNB → DUR, especially during busier seasons. It’s not a separate airline — the planes are SunExpress aircraft flying for SAA under SAA flight numbers. The crew comprises a mix of South Africans and Turkish nationals.
Sun Express is a 50/50 joint venture between Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines. It was founded in 1989 and it operates under the equal ownership structure.
