Intro

Amazingly beautiful, very clean and very safe (security personnel walking up and down the promenade all day long). The Umhlanga Rocks Promenade is a scenic coastal walkway in Umhlanga Rocks, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa — a popular spot for walking, jogging, sightseeing and enjoying ocean views along the Indian Ocean. Go on your own, with friends or enjoy a walk with your dog.

The promenade is officially known as the Ken O’Connor Promenade (originally the O’Connor Promenade) and stretches for about 2.7–3 km along the beach from Durban View Park in the south up to the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve in the north.

It’s paved and well maintained, making it ideal for leisurely strolls, jogging or running with beautiful ocean views the whole way.

The route connects key local features such as the Umhlanga Rocks Lighthouse, Whalebone (Umhlanga) Pier, and multiple beach access points, with places to stop for refreshments or ice cream. There are a number of high end hotels and resorts along the way with restaurant entrances on the promenade.

Highlights Along the Promenade

  • Umhlanga Lighthouse & Whalebone Pier — great spots for photos and to watch surfers, dolphins or sunset over the Indian Ocean.
  • Lifeguard-patrolled beaches such as Main Beach and Bronze Beach, with shark nets and facilities along the route.
  • Views towards Durban and the wider coastline, especially from elevated sections near Durban View Park.
  • Restaurants, cafés and food stalls along the promenade area, perfect for a break and with amazing sea views.

What to Expect

  • The promenade is suitable for all ages and fitness levels — from relaxed walks with family and pets to more energetic jogs.
  • Many locals and visitors take advantage of the path for sunset strolls and to soak up the coastal atmosphere.
  • It’s well lit and maintained, with public amenities available at several access points.

Ocean Mall

A short 5 minute walk from the promenade and you will be at the Ocean Mall, Radisson Blu Hotel and the Pearls. A 30-storey tower with a luxury hotel and apartments is rising above Ocean Mall.

What I particularly enjoyed

I really loved being able to go for a run and afterwards dive into the warm, inviting sea (24C).
