Intro
I enjoyed walking through the Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a beautiful walk and very peaceful. There are guided group walks departing daily at 9 am and 11 am from the Breakers Resort and I assume other hotels in the area will offer the same. I suggest the round trip starting at the promenade, walk along the boardwalk, walk past the Forest Cafe (if you have the time enjoy a hot or a cold drink there), walk across another boardwalk, walk in the forest, walk along a wooden bridge (don’t fall off the bridge – there are no railings), walk up and down the dunes, reach the beach and walk along the beach back to the promenade.
The Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve & Wildlife Sanctuary
The Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve & wildlife sanctuary is the primary protected “wildlife sanctuary”-style area right in Umhlanga Rocks. It’s a small but ecologically significant coastal nature reserve (about 26 ha) at the mouth of the Ohlanga River and Indian Ocean.
What to expect: Coastal and dune forest, wetlands, lagoon habitat with a diverse range of birds, small mammals, reptiles, and indigenous plants.
Activities: Easy walking and hiking trails (around ~2 km), birdwatching, peaceful picnicking spots, and boardwalks through natural vegetation.
Highlights: Forest trails lead from shaded woodlands down to the lagoon and on towards quieter beach areas.
Access: Free entry and generally open in daylight hours (best enjoyed during daytime).

The Hawaan Forest — Coastal forest sanctuary
Adjacent to the lagoon reserve, Hawaan Forest is an ancient indigenous coastal forest ecosystem. Guided access helps protect the habitat, which is home to many forest birds, monkeys and rare plant species.
SATIB Conservation Trust — Wildlife Rescue & Conservation Organisation
A local organisation involved in wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and environmental education — a good contact point if you’re interested in volunteering, conservation efforts, or animal welfare in the area.
