How to Increase your Red Blood Cell (Erythrocyte) Count

Intro – How to Increase your Red Blood Cell (Erythrocyte) Count

I went for my yearly blood tests, all was normal except a low erythrocyte (red blood cell) count. Dr. David Berman G.P. recommended me to repeat the tests a month later. I did, the results were better even though the red blood cell count could have been higher. Actual 4.44 X10^12/L, the normal range being 4.5 – 6.5 x10^12/L).

To increase your erythrocyte (red blood cell) count, focus on a diet rich in iron, folate and vitamin B12, as these nutrients are essential for red blood cell production. In addition to dietary changes, regular exercise and avoiding toxins can also positively impact your red blood cell count.

How to Increase your Red Blood Cell Erythrocyte Count

Dietary Changes

  • Iron: Include iron-rich foods like red meat, poultry, fish, shellfish, beans, lentils, and dark green leafy vegetables in your diet.
  • Folate (Vitamin B9): Good sources of folate include leafy green vegetables, beans, peanuts, liver, and seafood.
  • Vitamin B12: You can find vitamin B12 in eggs, meats, and fortified cereals.

Other Lifestyle Factors

  • Regular Exercise: Physical activity can stimulate erythropoiesis, the process of red blood cell production.
  • Hydration: Staying hydrated helps maintain optimal blood volume, which supports red blood cell function.
  • Avoidance of Toxins: Minimize exposure to toxins like alcohol and cigarette smoke, which can negatively affect red blood cell production.
Important Note: If you have a low red blood cell count, consult a healthcare professional to determine the underlying cause and discuss appropriate treatment options, which may include dietary changes, supplements or medical interventions.
