Intro

My dad is 101 year old and in June 2024 he was diagnosed with Early-Stages Dementia (ESD). He loves the sea so I thought a sea holiday would do him and I wonders. I was a bit apprehensive w.r.t. air travel but I am pleased to report that he thoroughly enjoyed both flights. We flew SAA Sun Express and the service was outstanding. At the resort I accompanied dad on his morning and afternoon walks even though it was a battle: it was moaning and groaning all the way. We would walk to the iconic Promenade but he wouldn’t go down the steps to the beach… We stayed at the Breakers, an amazing resort – highly recommended.

On the day of our arrival in Umhlanga my dad and I spent some time at the Ocean Mall. This is a beautiful shopping centre next door to the Radisson Blue, Cabana Beach and Umhlanga Sands. It is a 4-5 minute walk to the Promenade, the Lighthouse, the Whalebone Pier and the Beverley Hills Hotel. I had a huge and very tasty ‘Classic’ burger at the Grand Bay Spur. Sadly my dad only had a small portion.

I certainly enjoyed my runs and swims. If you enjoy the beach, Umhlanga Rocks is an amazing experience. Friends Nelson and Esther joined us on the 2nd last day of our stay. They slept in their own apartment but they spent the rest of the time with us. It was just awesome🤗🤗. So much to reminisce about… so little time.

Nelson and Esther, was Tony’s cooking any good? Thanks for your able assistance Esther, you and I prepared a number of meals in no time… nutritious, tasty meals😋😋

All going well we will do it all over again in Januray 2027☀️😎⛵🌊
