Foods and Drinks Good for Sleep at Night

Intro – Foods and Drinks Good for Sleep at Night

Having a dad who wakes up often at night and then has difficulty in falling asleep prompted me to consult medical doctors, I talked to friends, did a bit of reading and quite a bit of experimenting.

For a good night’s sleep, consider incorporating foods rich in tryptophan (such as turkey, chicken, fish and nuts), melatonin (such as kiwi, walnuts, tart cherries), magnesium (like almonds, bananas and leafy greens) into your evening routine, along with warm milk or herbal teas such as chamomile and rooibos tea and don’t forget the honey.

Foods Rich in Tryptophan

Turkey: Known for its high tryptophan content, which is a precursor to serotonin and melatonin.

Chicken and Fish: Other good sources of tryptophan, contributing to the production of sleep-promoting hormones.

Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds are rich in tryptophan and magnesium, which can help relax muscles and promote sleep.

Cheese: Certain types of cheese, like low-fat cheese, also contain tryptophan.

Oats and Oatmeal: Contain tryptophan and are a good source of carbohydrates, which can help tryptophan cross the blood-brain barrier.

Yogurt: Another source of tryptophan, especially when combined with carbohydrates.

Foods Rich in Melatonin

Grapes: Contain melatonin.

Tart Cherries: Naturally contain high levels of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles.

Kiwi: Contains melatonin and serotonin, which can help promote sleep.

Walnuts: Contain melatonin and other sleep-promoting nutrients like magnesium.

Almonds: Contain melatonin and are a good source of magnesium.

Pistachios: Contain melatonin and are a good source of magnesium.

Tomatoes: Contain melatonin.

Foods Rich in Magnesium

Almonds: A good source of magnesium, which helps relax muscles and promote sleep.

Bananas: Contain magnesium and potassium, which help regulate muscle function and promote relaxation.

Leafy Greens: Spinach and other leafy greens are rich in magnesium.

Nuts and Seeds: Many nuts and seeds, like almonds, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds, are good sources of magnesium.

Avocados: Contain magnesium and healthy fats.

Black Beans: Contain magnesium and fiber.

Other Sleep-Promoting Foods and Drinks

Warm Milk: Can be soothing and may contain tryptophan, which can help promote sleep.

Herbal Teas: Chamomile tea is known for its calming properties and can help promote sleep. Rooibos tea can help promote relaxation and potentially improve sleep due to its caffeine-free nature and the presence of minerals like magnesium and calcium, which play a role in sleep regulation.

Oatmeal: A good source of carbohydrates, which can help tryptophan cross the blood-brain barrier.

Rice: Contains melatonin.

Fatty Fish: Salmon and other fatty fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can help improve sleep quality.

Honey: consuming honey, especially before bed, may help improve sleep quality by promoting relaxation and potentially aiding in the release of sleep-promoting hormones. Take a 1-2 teaspoons of honey (about 25-45g) before bedtime, either alone or mixed into other food products for a calming bedtime ritual.

Water: Staying hydrated is important for overall health, including sleep.
