Heritage Day, Braai Day South Africa

Heritage Day, Braai Day South Africa – 24 Sept

Intro

Heritage Day in South Africa, celebrated annually on September 24th, evolved from Shaka day, a holiday honouring the Zulu King Shaka, into a national day promoting cultural diversity. The holiday aims to encourage all South Africans to embrace and share their unique cultural traditions, languages, and histories, embodying the spirit of the “Rainbow Nation”. The term “National Braai Day” gained prominence after Archbishop Desmond Tutu encouraged South Africans to gather for a braai (barbecue) as a way to celebrate their heritage and bring the community together.

The Theme for Heritage Day 2025

The official theme for Heritage Day South Africa 2025 is “Re-imagine Our Heritage Institutions for a New Era”. This theme highlights the need to evolve heritage institutions beyond custodians of the past into dynamic engines for a future that is innovative, socially responsive, and economically inclusive.
