⭐ Key Points About World AIDS Day

1. Established in 1988

It was the first-ever global health day, created by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations to focus international attention on HIV/AIDS.

2. Annual Theme

Each year has a theme – recent themes have focused on:

  • Ending inequalities in healthcare
  • Expanding access to HIV treatment
  • Strengthening community leadership
  • Ending the epidemic by 2030.

3. The Red Ribbon

The international symbol of HIV awareness and support.

HIV Prevention Injection (PrEP Injection)

The injection is called long-acting injectable PrEP Cabotegravir (brand name: Apretude):

  • It prevents HIV infection before exposure.
  • Given once every 2 months after two initial doses.
  • More than 99% effective when taken on schedule.
  • Suitable for people at high risk of HIV exposure.
