Intro – How Did It All Start?
Garden Day SA is an annual South African celebration that encourages people to appreciate their gardens and green spaces. It began in 2016, inspired by a group of gardening enthusiasts who wanted to bring people together to celebrate the joy of gardening. Over the years, it has grown into a nationwide movement, welcoming everyone, whether they have a large garden, a small patio, a balcony or a community garden. 1
In 2026, Garden Day SA takes place on Sunday, 18 October. The idea is simple: put down your gardening tools for a while, invite friends or family over, and enjoy the beauty of your garden. 🌿
Benefits of Gardening
Gardening is more than just a hobby. Planting, pruning, watering and weeding provide gentle physical activity, while spending time among plants can help us relax, reduce stress and improve our sense of wellbeing.
Gardening also gives us a wonderful opportunity to learn about nature, encourage pollinators, nurture living things and enjoy the satisfaction of watching plants grow and flower. Best of all, we can enjoy these benefits in our own gardens, no matter their size.
Safety – Preventing Skin Cancer
While enjoying our gardens, we should remember to protect ourselves from the South African sun. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation can damage our skin and increase the risk of skin cancer, even when the weather is cloudy or we are sitting in the shade.
Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and tightly woven clothing that covers your skin. Seek shade, particularly during the strongest sunlight hours, and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to exposed skin, reapplying it as directed. Remember that shade alone does not eliminate UV exposure. 3
It is also important to check our skin regularly and consult a doctor or dermatologist about any new or changing spots, sores that do not heal, or other suspicious changes.
How to Enjoy Garden Day
There are many ways to celebrate Garden Day SA. You could invite friends and family for a garden lunch, enjoy a cup of tea or coffee on the patio, take photographs of your favourite plants, or simply sit back and appreciate the surroundings.
You could also visit a nursery, plant something new, share cuttings with a neighbour or spend time tending to a favourite flower. If you do not have a garden, a balcony, patio, local park or community garden can be just as enjoyable.
The important thing is to take a break from the chores, appreciate the green spaces around us and share the joy of gardening.
