First Wednesday in April
National Walking Day is celebrated in the United States on the first Wednesday in April. Regardless of which country you live in we can all celebrate the event and do it with friends or solo, anytime and basically anywhere.
Why go for a Walk?
It improves your health, mood and it helps prevent ailments such as type II diabetes, cancer and heart disease.
Did you Know?
Archaeologists maintain that when humans were nomadic groups, they would often walk great distances to stalk their prey. Walking is essentially, what humans are physically best at. We are the slowest runners, the worst swimmers and we can’t even fly but walking is very much part of what we are.
How Was the National WalKing Day Created?
The American Heart Association launched National Walking Day in 2007 as part of its efforts to promote healthy living.
Physical activity is one of the best ways to improve overall health and manage stress. 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. are sedentary for more than eight hours each day, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). This can have negative consequences on physical and mental health.
The American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, established National Walking Day in 2007. Celebrated annually on the first Wednesday in April, this event encourages people to move more throughout their day. Communities across the country are invited to take a walk – whenever, wherever it suits them and raise awareness of the benefits of movement.
