30th August is National Vetkoek Magwinya Day in South Africa. Vetkoek (Afrikaans name that translates to English as ‘Fat Cake’) or Amagwinya (Zulu name) is a delightful, typically South African snack. It forms part of both Afrikaans and Zulu cultures and it consists basically of a mixture of flour, water, sugar and salt which is made into small balls and deep-fried until golden brown.
Vetkoek Magwinya, is similar to the Caribbean Johnny cake, the Dutch Oliebol and the Mexican Sopaipillas.
Vetkoek Magwinya make for a lovely dinner or snack. You can make them any size you like. They’re a great party snack if they are made small and filled with various processed meats, tuna and mayo, curried minced meat, cheese, onions, peas and carrots or basically anything you like.
They are very tasty!
