What better way to start the New Year right than hiking at Klipriviersberg with a nice group. Today was the 1st time in 5 weeks we had no rain. Wait! Jason told me that there was a lot of rain in the Nature Reserve around 2-3 this morning. And as I am writing this post it started to rain again. We have been blessed with a good rainy season but I digress… We had sparkling blues skies and the Nature Reserve was lush green as not seen in years. Thorns on branches extended to cover parts of the trail to cut skin but all part of the fun. There were also beautiful tiny wild flowers everywhere.
We were fortunate to see Wildebeest, Springbok and did I mention about the dassies? Baby dassies looked cute and they were puzzled by the fact that we, humans were looking at them.
Despite the enormous difference in size between the two, the dassie is the African elephant’s closest living relative. The close evolutionary relationship between the teeny-tiny Dassie and the ginormous African Elephant is deduced from similarities in the structure of their feet and teeth.
Ilka commented:
The dassie is a relative of the elephant? Something went wrong, somewhere…
