Intro – The Bedfordview Kensington Heritage Walk – 2023 Sept 24

Happy Heritage Day! It was a glorious day in Johannesburg. Cape Town and surrounds are experiencing devastating floods and in Joburg we could do with a bit of rain. But even without rain, pretty flowers are blooming everywhere displaying a rainbow of beautiful colours.

The highlight of our walk was a visit to the venerable Jeppe High School for Girls a subject for another blog post.

Dina Gonçalves was responsible for raising funds to build the bridge just before she passed away. She was such an amazing person and was so passionate about her teaching and her duties as Headmistress.

The water feature statue at the entrance to the school was donated by a former learner and is a copy of the statue Putto with Dolphin which is located in the Michelozzo courtyard, Palazzo Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, Florence.

My daughter attended Jeppe Girls from 2011-2015. I got involved in the Parent Association & was on the SGB as well. Each time I go back to the school I’m impressed at how well maintained the buildings, school grounds & gardens are. Well done to the SGB, the staff, Estate Management team, parents & the pupils. Great team effort. It’s great also to see additional sports facilities, such as the Hockey 🏑 Astro turf, & the much improved volleyball 🏐 courts & soccer ⚽️ 🥅 field, added to the school, to give the girls an opportunity to participate in different codes of sport.

Worth Mentioning…

It is worth mentioning that:

  1. In these walks and hikes you meet friends and you make new ones.
  2. Kensington is a Buyer’s Paradise – large, affordable homes, good schools (private and public), the nearby shopping malls of Bedford Centre, Park Meadows and Eastgate, tree lined streets, friendly people, a lovely suburb. It is most enjoyable to walk, run and/ or cycle in many parts of Kensington.

As one walks through the suburb it is encouraging to see how individuals and companies are renovating their properties and in so doing, increasing the value of their properties as well as the value of adjacent properties👍👌👏. Conversely the owners who do not care to even paint their walls decrease the market value of all the properties in the street they are in👎.
